Just had a huge earthquake where i live on Friday at 4:35AM.

Measured 7.1 on Richter sale - very similar to the one Haiti had, the Christchurch one being only slightly more strong.

No one died from it, which is really remarkable considering the strength of the quake.

Was a crazy experience. Lasted around a minute of violent shaking etc. Had stuff fall off my desk, broken glass, and the large cupboard next to my pc fell down and broke.

The damage has been fairly bad in the older parts of the city, with lots of the buildings falling down etc. However for the most part there is very little damage to houses etc. Our power was out for about 12 hours, and internet around 36 hours. There has also been some damage to the water and sewage pipes. As a result there is extensive flooding in some area's of the suburbs, and some water has been contaminated, though not all the supply has been tested, so we have been boiling all our drinking water etc.
